Love in a Fallen City, by Eileen Chang
Love in a Fallen City is a Chinese-language novel which was released all the way back in 1943. Written by Eileen Chang, who is regarded as one of the greatest writers of her era, the book is a collection of short stories set in the cities of Hong Kong and Shanghai during the 1930s and 40s.
It’s a fascinating book which lifts the lid on an era of Asian culture that was divided by politics and brought together in the stories by romance. The stories give an insight into the mentality of Asian women, their maturity and ability for unconditional love. Expertly telling the stories of tension between men and women who fall in love during the 30s and 40s, the book gives you a great handle on the mentality of Asian women.
Perhaps the most well-known short story from the book was made into a movie. Released in 1983, Love In A Fallen City was a romantic drama that told the story of a cynical playboy who pursues a shy divorcee on the eve of the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong. It’s a truly captivating story.
The Bonesetter’s Daughter, by Amy Tan
Split into two stories, The Bonesetter’s Daughter is another book which really gives you a valuable insight into the mentality of Asian women. It tells the story of the main character Ruth and her relationship with her mother. Ruth is an American-born Chinese woman who is dating a white man and has all sorts of family complications to take care of. Again, many of the common mentalities of Asian women are illustrated, including bravery and maturity.
